Description

An installation that conceives of the body as an “empty vessel,” gradually filled through its interactions with others and the external world. The infant’s body, representing an empty vessel, is juxtaposed with a television symbolizing its connection to the external world. Inside the television, the infant’s head is placed as a representation of memory. A soundscape composed of recordings from the artist’s daily life is layered into the space, recreating the auditory process through which specific information is unconsciously selected from the vast array of everyday sounds. By tracing the process through which information from the external world accumulates as perception and memory and is continuously renewed, the work visualizes the fluidity of the “self as an empty vessel,” formed through its relationships with others and the surrounding environment.
