Description
Although titled Self Portrait Vessel, the work is not a portrait of myself.
Beginning with portraits of artists, fictional characters, and historical figures who have influenced me, I grasp, crush, tear, and reconnect the clay. Through this repetition, the portraits are gradually drawn toward my own body, dissolving and eventually losing their distinct contours.
Even when my hands intend to reproduce someone else’s face, memories of the past become intertwined with my present body, reassembling themselves as memory-images into the likeness of someone entirely different.
A mask is a device for receiving another being into the body, and can also serve as a means of transforming the body into a “vessel.”
Through the structure of the mask as a means of receiving others, the work moves between intentional quotation and accidental mitate(reinterpretation through resemblance), attempting to give sculptural form to the memories and relationships with others that have shaped my sense of self, as a self-portrait.
説明
「Self Portrait Vessel」
